Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering

This apprenticeship covers the key fundamental areas of engineering and also the advanced level knowledge and understanding of maintenance engineering.

The programme covers a wide range of subjects and an apprentice will develop knowledge of engineering fundamentals, health and safety, engineering maintenance, advanced mathematics, computer aided design (CAD) techniques and general engineering maintenance techniques.

The programme can be focused towards Mechanical or Electrical pathways and provision can also be made to prepare the apprentice for study beyond level 3. Optional units can be selected to give the apprentice skills and knowledge which would introduce them to higher level study.

Course length

The normal duration for completion is 3 years for an advanced apprenticeship, unless individual circumstances (such as significant prior learning) enable the learner to make exceptional progress and complete within this time. The course has to last a minimum of 12 months.

Training and support

An engineering apprentice will need to attend the Academy two days a week to complete the relevant learning for successful completion of the ‘technical certificate’. The requirement to attend the Academy will be for 2 years or until the ‘technical certificate’ is complete.

The rest of the training will take place in the workplace by the employer and be over 3 years. The apprentice will be assigned an Apprentice Co-ordinator who will visit every 6-10 weeks to ensure the apprentice and the employer are happy with progress and achievement regarding the NVQ element of the apprenticeship.

All advanced level apprentices will need to attain a Level 2 Functional Skill qualification in English, Mathematics or ICT or have C grades or above at GCSE level.
